Mi-tuo straw mat had woven in itself the dream of Southern Taiwan for nearly half a century – you may not know that?
But when people talk about straw mat, many people would only think that it is the specialty of Da-jia Township of Taichung County. Actually, papyrus, the raw material that is used to make the straw mat, can be seen all over Mi-tuo; it can be found in Lu-jhu San-yeh Monument (today's San-yeh Village) in Cao-ben County, Gangshan Tan-di-yang, Wu-jia-wei (today's Jia-sing District), as well as areas of lower altitude such as Yen-cheng, Wen-an Villages of Mi-tuo Township. In addition, Mi-tuo Middle School and about 100,000 square meters of land by the beach in front of Nan-an Elementary School are also used to be where papyrus were grown.

During the peak era of Mi-tou Straw Mat, the most advanced fully automatic machinery operation was implemented to meet the demand from all over Taiwan with greatly increased production quantity. In the residence area in between Mi-tuo Elementary School and Mi-tuo Middle School, in the Mi-jing and Guang-he communities (will be collectively called Sia-Liao below) on today's Jhong-jheng West Road, each family, old and young, would all be weaving straw mats; it can be said to be a straw mat street. In the 70's~80's, the industry had been flourishing for over 30~40 years and had been one of the most crucial source of income for the township.

Today, as more and more straw mat substitutes start to be produced, and with the low-price competition from products made in China, there is only one factory that manufactures Mi-tuo straw mat. It is the bamboo and straw mat factory managed by Mr. Chen Wang-Chang with the name of Jin-sin-chang.
