Inside Mi-tuo Township, there still kept many traditional three-sided houses, which are now mixed amidst building made of steel and cement, creating a distinctive architectural scenery.
Among them, the Wu Family Old House is considered the most symbolic building. Its cultural distinctiveness is not only because of its long history; it is rumored that the pioneer of the Wu family, Shou Wu, moved to Taiwan from City 18, Jiao-shan-jiao, Hou-tian Township, Nan-jin County, Jhang-jhou Government Office, Fujian Province in Ying-Li 7 (1653) in Ming Dynasty; he was 14 years old at the time (some said 17 years old). He was earlier than Koxinga by 10 years. He settled down in Mi-luo Harbor (today's Mi-tuo).
Wu Family Swallow Tail Old House is a four-sided house with three halls and two courtyards built and passed down by third generational Wu Family. The main hall is at the center, and the front, middle, rear sections along with left and right guarding wings are assigned to family members according to their seniority starting on the left and then the right side. Wu Family Swallow Old House, with its more than a hundred years of history, is the most symbolic architecture in Mi-tuo. However, it had been intentionally damaged twice during the period with the most recent time was in 1986. Due to road expansion project, the front room that was about the size of a house was forced to be torn down, leaving it to be today's appearance we see today. |
